In an attempt to create positive school culture we commonly see educators respond to student behavior from the end of their ropes.

It's easy to react to negative behavior.

We remind. We redirect. We put out fires as they come. And sometimes… it works. But sometimes, it feels like we’re solving the same problem over and over again—just in different forms.

In many schools, culture work is reactive.

A behavior happens. A moment unfolds. A need shows up... and caring educators respond.

But what if culture didn’t depend on reaction? What is there was culture infrastructure? What if it was built—intentionally, consistently, and proactively—into the everyday experience of school?

Reactive culture responds to disconnection. Proactive culture creates connection—on purpose, and then redirects back to common language and positive expectations.

Reactive culture says: “Be kind.” Proactive culture shows people how.
